Legal Counsel

Job Purpose

The Legal Counsel at SAS has responsibility for contributing to the success of SAS through providing a professional in-house legal service as a commercially oriented business partner.  You will take a key role in advising the business on a range of commercial matters including working closely with our air ambulance customers and helping our operations team with the supply chain and manufacturing, maintenance, and design of aircraft and their interiors. We also cover a wide Legal remit from employment, to general commercial, risk mitigation and dispute resolution, corporate, property, and aviation. You will participate in the development and implementation of policy, procedure, and know-how in the legal function and elsewhere in the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the business to devise efficient strategies for the provision of legal services that are fit for future growth and fit SAS’s strategy and commerciality;
  • Provide expert, pragmatic, commercial and risk aware advice and support on issues for the whole Company focusing primarily on the Operations, People, and Finance teams and being seen as their trusted counsel;
  • Proactively identify arising risk areas and work with key stakeholders across the business to develop and deliver risk mitigation solutions;
  • Managing a legal in-box function for the business;
  • Deputising for the General Counsel in her absence on an ad-hoc basis;
  • Draft and negotiate contracts with suppliers and customers;
  • Design, devise and deliver relevant legal training programmes;
  • Developing strong working relationships with key stakeholders;
  • Work to devise and deliver a data protection policy and key documents for the business;
  • Providing standard templates, and legal training on those templates, when required;
  • Assisting with Company Secretarial matters;
  • Promoting good governance and ensuring contracts are stored in the control portal;
  • Providing support to the Legal Director on a range of matters;
  • Managing complex transactions involving regulatory matters and multi-jurisdictional issues;
  • Managing a varied workload to meet tight deadlines;
  • Working with small teams across the business to provide legal advice and guidance for small business projects and bids;
  • Consistently anticipate, provide timely evaluation, propose mitigation strategies for and advise management of potential risks in contractual, regulatory, revenue recognition, compliance, financial, intellectual property, employment, and legal areas;
  • Mentoring other team members or other Company employees to assist their development;
  • Promoting the Company’s culture and assisting with its delivery and promoting risk management strategies across the Company;
  • Working on ad-hoc matters as requested by the Legal Director.

Emergency Response

  • Maintain knowledge of the emergency response programme policies, processes and procedures, as defined by the Emergency Response Procedures. Be prepared to respond in a crisis as an ERP representative, if required by the role.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Extensive In-house experience of negotiation, litigation, and general company/commercial law, and negotiating and drafting a wide range of complicated commercial contracts
  • A good degree and legal qualification
  • At least 2 years post qualification experience as a qualified solicitor permitted to practice in England and Wales
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work autonomously or as an excellent team player who can work with minimal supervision
  • Evidence of being a self-starter who is good at identifying problems and proactively remedying them
  • Ability to act with a high level of integrity, discretion and honesty and the ability to command respect
  • Ensuring confidentiality in all matters
  • Strong ability to work under pressure and meet demanding deadlines
  • Ability to grasp complex situations, and get up to speed quickly and present considered advice as to how to resolve challenges that arise
  • Evidence of commercial awareness


  • Confidence and technical ability to be able to deal with issues outside of personal experience and ability to learn quickly on the job
  • Highly adept at managing change, expansion and project management
  • Experience of commercial and/or corporate law is essential. It is desirable if you have experience of intellectual property, data protection, aviation, property, financial, regulatory, and employment law (experience from law firm or in-house will be considered)
  • Ability to win the confidence of key individuals through a commercial and pragmatic approach, offering innovative ideas and solutions. The ability to win people over, rather than directing people what to do
  • Experienced and comfortable working with strong external parties with an understanding and ability to manage and maximise these relationships in a commercial and cost-effective manner
  • Experience of international business operations
  • Full, clean driving licence
  • Willingness to work out of normal working hours, if required
